ILO, Serbia to continue intensive cooperation

State Secretary at the Serbian Ministry of Labour and Social Policy Snezana Lakicevic-Stojacic said today at the 8th European Regional Meeting of the ILO that Serbia supports close cooperation with the ILO.
According to a statement issued by the Ministry of Labour and Social Policy, Lakicevic-Stojacic said at the meeting, which is being held in Lisbon from February 9 to 13, that cooperation will help bring about the necessary changes in the sphere of labour and social legislation and advance the tri-party social dialogue.
She said that during the past year 14 reports on the implementation of ILO conventions in Serbia were submitted and 15 direct demands by the expert committee were responded to.
Apart from these regular obligations during 2008 draft laws on affirming documents related to ILO statutes, the affirmation of Convention 187 on health and safety at work and Convention 167 on health and safety in the building industry were also prepared.
According to Lakicevic-Stojacic Serbia will be actively engaged in the ILO campaign for drafting new conventions that will deal with the protection of the rights of HIV positive workers.
She said that the ILO Declaration on Social Justice for a Fair Globalization that was adopted at the ILO session held in June last year was directed to all relevant institutions in Serbia, adding that the ILO has appointed a national coordinator to Serbia.
Three more conventions will be ratified this year, the Maritime Convention, Convention 185 on the identification documents of ship crews and Convention 183 on maternity protection.
The 8th regional meeting of the ILO was opened by ILO Director General Juan Somavia, who in his inaugural speech highlighted the importance of close coordination between ILO member states, particularly within Europe.
He stressed that it is necessary to create more good jobs through sustainable development, dignified work programmes and tri-party social dialogue.
Participants of the meeting were also addressed via video link by European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso and they were welcomed by their host Portuguese Prime Minister Jose Socrates.
