Several memorandums signed with Cuban delegation

A Serbian government delegation headed by Minister of Trade and Services Slobodan Milosavljevic met today with a Cuban state and economic delegation headed by Cuban Foreign Trade Minister Raul de la Nuez.

According to a statement issued by the Ministry of Trade and Services, ministers Milosavljevic and Raul de la Nuez signed a memorandum of understanding between the Serbian Ministry of Trade and Services and The Cuban Ministry of Foreign Trade.

The memorandum covers several areas of cooperation – trade in industrial, agricultural and nutritional goods, pharmaceutical products, tourism services, building services, health-care and banking services, as well as continuation of negotiations on solving the problem of Cuba’s debt to Serbia.

A memorandum of understanding on development of capacities and technical cooperation between the Serbian Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Water Management and the Cuban Ministry of Agriculture was signed at the meeting. The memorandum includes areas such joint research, capacities development, technical assistance, technology transfer, trade negotiations on developing livestock production technology, veterinary services as well as services concerning plant health, the possibility of signing phytosanitary contracts, seeds management and production, development of the fresh fruit and vegetable market, and development of technology in various areas of production.

The possibility of improving cooperation in the areas of economy, agriculture, health-care, pharmaceutical products trade, energy, tourism, education, construction, science and environmental protection was discussed at the meeting.

Milosavljevic thanked the Cuban delegation for their visit and stressed that the governments of the two countries have great potential for advancing economic and trade relations.

Specific projects such as a $50 million loan by Agrobanka for purchasing Serbian origin products, particularly food, creation of a joint company in Cuba for production and sale of spices, sale of Cuban biotech products in Serbia, supply to distilleries for alcohol in Cuba, and transfer of technology for the production of biolarvicide in Serbia, were also discussed at the meeting.

Raul de la Nuez said that proposed projects would be an excellent incentive for intensifying bilateral relations. He stressed that Cuba needs projects for constructing hurricane resistant residential buildings, and expressed his wish for Serbian designers to participate in the work.

The two delegations talked about possibilities of cooperation in the areas of health (exchange of experience, production of medicines and biotechnology), mining and energy (possibility of cooperation between the Serbian and Cuban oil industries in research and participation in oil and gas exploitation in Cuba), education (student exchange, organisation of language schools) environmental protection (biodiversity protection), tourism, etc.

It was agreed at the meeting that the question of Cuba’s debt should be resolved through talks, and that this issue should not hinder economic and trade relations between the two countries.

Agreement was also reached that Cuban and Serbian delegations will periodically meet, and Serbian Health Minister Tomica Milosavljevic will soon visit Cuba.

Besides Minister of Trade and Services Slobodan Milosavljevic, Health Minister Tomica Milosavljevic, the meeting was attended by representatives of ministries of trade and services, health, economy and regional development, mining and energy, agriculture, forestry and water management, as well as environmental protection and spatial planning, concludes the statement.
