In a statement to the news agency Tanjug, Munter said that according to this decision the last part worth $5 million of the total aid for Serbia this year worth $51.6 million will also be released. Serbia received $46.6 million for prgrammes for democratistion and the civil sector.
He said that Rice gave a positive assessment of Serbia’s cooperation with the ICTY, thus recognising Serbia’s efforts to fulfill its international obligations, and the aid released is intended for reforms being carried out by the Serbian government.
The Ambassador expressed satisfaction at the fact that Serbia, owing to its cooperation with the ICTY, has met with conditions for receiving aid.
US aid to Serbia is meant for programmes to support the government and the civil sector; humanitarian aid and help for strengthening democracy. The certification applies to the funds which are intended for support to state institutions, said Munter and added that the certification, above all, has a political significance, and then financial.
According to Munter, the funds will support efforts being made by the new pro-European government to improve programmes for economic and judicial reforms.
Munter said that he is optimistic that Belgrade will fulfill other obligations as well and once again congratulated the Serbian government on the arrest and handing over of Radovan Karadzic.
We are proud of our deep friendship with Serbia and the Serbian people. The aid meant for development is only one aspect of this friendship, which also includes a firm and growing military partnership, as well as investments by US firms, said Munter.
The US Ambassador recalled that since 2001 the US has given aid worth nearly $668 million for development in Serbia.
