According to the statement issued by the Defence Ministry, the clean-up work is being done in the framework of a memorandum of understanding with Russia’s state relief agency EMERCOM, supported by the Russian government. The clean-up action is being carried out in accordance with international humanitarian demining standards.
Speaking to representatives of the Russian deminers and Director of the Serbian Demining Centre Petar Mihajlovic, Jeftic said that the work being done at the airport is very important, and added that the Russians are providing valuable help and cooperation must be continued.
An area of 16 hectares was examined with demining machines from July 31 to August 20 this year from a total area of 70.40 hectares. Manual examination, which follows machine demining, has been completed on two hectares.
Five cluster bombs and two bombs from the Second World War were found on the demined area. State Secretary Jeftic was accompanied by the Defence Ministry’s deputy director of the sector for emergency situations Branko Jovanovic and head of the department for emergency situations of the City of Nis Zarko Damnjanovic.
