The Ministry says in a statement that Milosavljevic will present results achieved in the fight against HIV/AIDS in Serbia, including the adoption and implementation of the National Strategy for Fighting HIV/AIDS, setting up a unique system for tracking and assessing the national response to HIV/AIDS, opening new centres for treating the illness and acquiring funds from the Global Fund for the implementation of the project, worth €9 million.
An important segment of these activities in Serbia is the inclusion of the entire civil sector in the joint fight against the disease. Therefore, apart from Minister Milosavljevic and Assistant Minister Ivana Misic, the delegation will include representatives from NGOs which provide support to HIV positive persons.
The success of the implementation of the declaration on fighting HIV/AIDS, adopted in 2001, and a political declaration on the same topic, adopted in 2006, will be assessed at the New York meeting.
UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon will present a report on achievements and challenges in the global fight against HIV/AIDS. The report relies on reports from 147 countries, including Serbia.
Last year almost 2.5 million people contracted HIV, whereas the number in 1998 stood at 3.2 million. The number of deaths has fallen from 3.9 million in 2001 to 2.1 million in 2007.
Ban Ki-moon’s report stresses that despite the constant increase in global investments in the fight against HIV, which last year amounted to $10 billion, there is still a huge discrepancy between actual needs and available funds. For instance, in underdeveloped and developing countries only three million people are on the antiviral therapy, which accounts for only 30% of people who need this kind of therapy.
