The Serbian Ministry of Environmental Protection stated today that the Serbian environmental protection inspection service has brought criminal charges against those responsible in the Galenka Fitofarmacija factory for large scale pollution.

The statement specifies that criminal charges will also be brought for endangering human life and property.
On the basis of preliminary results provided by the authorised organisations of the Belgrade Public Health Institute, the inspection commission has decided to enforce a temporary ban on the production of pesticides in the factory until a report is submitted on the technical process of production and the risk it poses to the environment.
The Belgrade Public Health Institute submitted today its preliminary report to the Ministry of Environmental Protection on the tests done on air samples taken from the affected area after the incident, in which a fire broke out following an
explosion in the Galenkia Fitofarmacija factory.
According to the report, the concentration of dimetoat in the air was higher than normal, namely in the neighbourhoods of Altina and Zemun Polje they were 2 and 3 times higher than normal respectively.
In the industrial zone of Zemun the concentration was 3 times higher than normal, and in the southern part of the neighbourhood Batajnica on the night of April 6 and 7, the concentration surpassed the normal reading.
