The Serbian Ministry for Diaspora stated today that as of March 2008, Serbian citizens will pay a fee of RSD 1,000 for the new biometric passport, whereas Serbian citizens living abroad and the diaspora will have to set aside €25 for that purpose instead of the current fee of €195.
The statement reads that the Ministry for Diaspora has on several occasions initiated the reduction of this fee and adds that this is only one of the actions it has undertaken with the aim of resolving the diaspora’s status issues.
All surveys of the diaspora’s stance show that Serbs living abroad think that this fee is too high, says the statement and adds that the new fee for issuing the Serbian passport was determined at a Serbian government session by the Bill on amendments to the Law on state administrative fees.
Furthermore, the Ministry’s sector for status-related issues actively monitors the situation and proposes measures which should lead to a more complete exercise of rights of the Serbian diaspora in its home country.
Together with line ministries, the Ministry for Diaspora is striving to better inform Serbian citizens living abroad by gathering data on the most consequential happenings in their home country, printing brochures and information leaflets to help the diaspora get better acquainted with the documentation it needs, the amount of certain fees, as well as who to contact for every concrete issue or problem and how long a certain procedure will take, concludes the statement.
