President of the National Council for cooperation with the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) Rasim Ljajic said today in Brussels that he expects a decision on initialling the Stabilisation and Association Agreement (SAA) will be brought following Tribunal’s Chief Prosecutor Carla Del Ponte’s visit to Belgrade.
Following a meeting with EU Enlargement Commissioner Olli Rehn, Ljajic said that Belgrade is undertaking several activities regarding the issue of cooperation with the Hague tribunal and announced a number of concrete actions which should contribute to positively resolving demands presented by Del Ponte in her report to foreign ministers of EU countries.
He voiced hope that after October 25 and 26, when Del Ponte is scheduled to visit Belgrade, Serbia will initial the SAA and a compromise will be found which will protect Serbia’s national interests while demands by the Hague tribunal are met.
The European Commission appreciates the efforts made by Serbia and I hope that final results will be adequately valued, said Ljajic and reiterated that there is absolute political will in Belgrade to hand over all Hague indictees.
