In a statement to the Vienna daily Standard, Jeremic said that Serbia does not wish to negotiate Kosovo’s UN membership and stressed that this is one thing Albanians will not get under any conditions.
A country can get UN membership only through the recommendation of the Security Council, which cannot be expected in this case, said Jeremic alluding to Russia, as the country announced that it will veto any resolution on the province’s independence.
Jeremic said that “25 minutes is enough to solve the Kosovo issue” and pointed out that the problem is “in the deadline itself.”
According to him, if there is a deadline after which one option will gain the upper hand, then that side will simply wait for the deadline to expire.
He explained that Albanians are doing the same in this case, though at the same time an agreement could be reached if the deadline is abolished.
Jeremic warned of the consequences of the province’s unilateral declaration of independence following December 10, which would signal that UN rules are not in force any more.
He emphasised that if the province unilaterally declares independence, all Western Balkan countries will suffer destabilisation and asked why any rules should in that case continue to exist in other places – Macedonia, Bosnia or Caucasus region.
Jeremic also asked that all Western Balkan states get EU candidate status.
