The Ministry of Environmental Protection says in a statement that environmental ministers stressed the importance of this process and agreed on key areas of action for the future.
Serbian Minister of Environmental Protection Sasa Dragin chaired the concluding session of
the 6th Ministerial Conference and said that the joint work is to continue, as well as further harmonisation in the area of environmental protection, capacity building and continuous monitoring of the environment.
At the final session, titled “The Future of the Process”, Portuguese Minister of Environment Francisco Nunes Correia spoke on behalf of the EU and said that the “Environment for Europe” process has provided an important and extremely valuable framework for further improvement of policies in this sector.
Correia stressed that the EU is proud to have the key role in this process and added that the union will keep supporting policy reforms in the environmental sector in the UNECE region.
Director of the Swiss Federal Office for the Environment Bruno Oberle said that this process has always had a pioneering role when it comes to environmental protection.
According to Oberle, future priorities of the process are clear – enforcement of adopted decisions, harmonisation of policies in the environmental protection sector and constant adjustment of decisions with particularities of every country in the region.
Russian Deputy Minister for Natural Resources Aleksey Varlamov emphasised the importance of the “Environment for Europe” process for countries in transition because it helped them hasten the adoption and implementation of decisions on environmental protection.
As has been noted on numerous occasions during the conference, economic development and protection of the environment must be parallel processes, stressed Varlamov.
Ministers from UNECE countries thanked the Serbian government and the Ministry of Environmental Protection for having organised the conference of utmost importance for further development of the process.
