In a statement to the press following talks with heads of the Belgrade municipality of Stari Grad, Markovic said that with the adoption of the new law it will be possible to call local elections by the end of the year, in accordance with the Serbian Constitution.
He said that local elections will most probably be held in spring next year, and as envisaged by the draft law, according to a two-round system.
According to Markovic, the new law will resolve the problem of instability in authorities at the local level and remove the element of party competition which existed thus far.
Markovic said that the new law on local self government will give widened jurisdiction to municipalities, which will lead to their effective functioning.
He said that by the end of the year a bill on the law on civil registration which will be a good basis for regulation of voters’ lists in Serbia.
