The government yesterday brought the Decision on formation of the gender equality council and appointed Snezana Lakicevic-Stojacic its president.
Lakicevic-Stojacic told Tanjug that that along with the parliament’s committee for gender equality this rounds up institutionalisation of mechanisms for improving position of women.
According to her, gender equality is ideological and political issue and there is no room for malicious things as at this point the position of women in Serbia is not satisfactory.
She warned that 56% of women are unemployed and are victims of transition, especially those aged between 40 and 50.
Women in Serbia earn 17% less then men, Lakicevic-Stojacic said.
Serbian population includes 52% women and they must not be seen as problem but as resource that we must use for the country’s speedier economic progress, she pointed out.
She also announced activities on preparing an international conference on the fight against violence against women which will take place in Belgrade on October 25.
A campaign “16 days of activism to fight violence against women” will follow, added Lakicevic-Stojacic.
According to her, national strategy for improving the position of women and equality of genders should be ready for adoption by the end of November, after which a gender equality law is to be adopted.
In the upcoming period, we also need to focus on recommendations and conclusions from the last meeting within the framework of the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW), Lakicevic-Stojacic said and noted that this is a good way to understand that the gender equality is a serious issue.
