At the regional conference on the role of supreme courts in the implementation of the convention of human rights at the national level, Petrovic stressed that the Serbian government is undoubtedly willing and dedicated to the implementation of all the principles stemming from the convention.
He said that Serbia adopted the Draft law on the Constitutional Court which will introduce constitutional complaint and thus reduce the pressure on the European Court of Human Rights.
Petrovic explained that the constitutional appeal will allow citizens to react in the cases of violation of the right to fair trial and announced that the draft law on Constitutional Court will be sent to the government within ten days whereas parliament should discuss it in late September or October.
He said that Serbia is making great efforts to provide the law on free legal aid.
The Minister also noted that the aim of reforms is for judiciary to become efficient, independent and fair.
He announced that Supreme Judiciary Council and State Council of Prosecutors will be established by the end of 2008.
President of the Serbian Supreme Court Vida Petrovic-Skero pointed out that countries in transition are tasked with a serious mission to harmonise their standards with international ones in all areas, as well as in the field of citizens’ rights protection.
She said that the Supreme Court has to stimulate other courts to improve their work and give them guidelines for the implementation of the European Convention for the Protection of Human Rights. By organising this conference, Serbia demonstrated its devotion to the values stated in the convention, she added.
The conference was organised as part of
Serbia’s presidency over the Council of Europe Committee of Ministers. President of the European Court Jean-Paul Costa will also take part in the conference.
