The Serbian Minsitry of Interior stated today that following a several year long and in-depth investigation, the police gathered sufficient material evidence on illegal sale of cigarettes in the period 1996–1998, thanks to which they identified and arrested six members of an organised criminal group.
The statement adds that the police took into custody the following suspects:
Sinisa Stojcic,
Radisav Gvozdenovic,
Petar Milenkovic, Dejan Milenovic, Stojan Misic and Nenad Zivanovic.
In 1997, Sinisa Stojcic organised the import of cigarettes into Serbia falsely declaring them at the customs as other goods.
Smuggled cigarettes were distributed through Serbia and the perpetrators avoided paying customs fees, excise and other tax.
Also in 1997, Petar Milenkovic, who worked as assistant to the customs administrator, disabled the regular control of the department for fight against smuggling and thus allowed cigarettes to be brought into Serbia illegally.
Cigarettes were declared as toilet paper and then illegally distributed throughout Serbia.
Police is working out identities of the remaining members of this criminal group, adds the statement.
