Serbian Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica said today during the talks with US Assistant Secretary of State Daniel Fried that the government launched an initiative for new talks on Kosovo-Metohija and that it is against the idea that the UN Security Council should adopt any resolution before the completion of the new negotiating process.
Kostunica stressed that future negotiations should develop within the framework of the existing UN Resolution 1244 and that the government of Serbia expects that the US will respect the UN Charter which guarantees sovereignty and territorial integrity of Serbia as well as inviolability of its internationally recognised borders.
He pointed out that respecting those principles is the basis for developing good relations between Serbia and the US and warned that the idea of Kosovo independence is a most dangerous project in Europe today as it has a destructive character and is against all principles of international order.
During the talks, Fried supported the monitored independence of Kosovo.
