Miroljub Labus
Labus called on Austrian businessmen to invest in Serbia, stressing that the country’s investment risk has been reduced following an agreement with the London Club of commercial creditors and the election of a new president.
According to him, Schuessel promised that Austria will make every effort to help Serbia and said that the country is interested in boosting economic ties with Serbia.
The Deputy Prime Minister recalled that 120 Austrian companies and leading banks have established presence in Serbia and said that the Austrian Chancellor also pledged to help Serbia’s privatisation and pension system reform efforts.
The talks also touched on scrapping visa requirements for Serbian citizens, said Labus. He explained that Austria cannot abolish visa requirements on its own but can encourage the EU to liberalise the visa regime.
Labus went on to say that the meeting also focused on cooperation with The Hague tribunal, adding that a feasibility study for signing a stabilisation and association agreement with the EU will be on the agenda once Serbia makes progress in cooperation with The Hague.
The Deputy Prime Minister said that Austria offers assistance in the resolution of the Kosovo problem, and reiterated that Belgrade is prepared for the dialogue which calls for the willingness of both sides.
Labus stressed that Austria is Serbia's big friend, and that its businessmen came to Serbia much before others. He said that Serbia has good relations with Austria and its government, which is an excellent groundwork for future cooperation.
Labus is heading a Serbian government's delegation on the ministerial conference "Creating new environment for private investment in Southeastern Europe", which will look at possibilities for development of business cooperation and partnership, strengthening of investment and the private sector, and reforms of judiciary in that region.
During the meeting with Fischer and Schuessel, Labus conveyed Serbian government's deep condolences on the death of Austrian President Thomas Klestil.
Also, Labus congratulated newly-elected president Heinz Fischer on tomorrow's inauguration in office.
