According to a statement by the Ministry of Public Administration and Local Self-Government, Markovic will present the priorities of Serbia during its chairmanship of the CoE, with special emphasis on democracy on a local level and the work done in Serbia in the area of local-self governance.
The Minister will meet with CoE Secretary-General Terry Davis, and hold meetings with President of the Congress Halvdan Skard and Chief Executive of the Congress Ulrich Bohner.
The chairmanship of the CoE, an organisation with 47 member states, is a great honour and obligation for Serbia, but it is also an opportunity to promote Serbia’s position in Europe as a democratic, multiethnic European state which is a serious candidate for EU membership and Euro-Atlantic integration in the near future, reads the statement.
Serbia, as all former CoE presiding countries and its predecessor San Marino, will continue to make intensive efforts to realise the aims which member countries of the CoE have agreed upon at the highest political level.
These are, above all, promotion of human rights, particularly minority rights, the rule of law and democracy, tolerance, fight against terrorism, organised crime and corruption, strengthening good neighborly relations, strengthening European identity and unity based on fundamental values and respect of common European heritage and cultural diversity, as well as capacity building in local communities and individuals.
