Veljovic said that taking hard hitting action against the financial power of organised crime is a priority and challenge for the Serbian police, adding that it is necessary to improve cooperation between police in the region.
According to Veljovic, experience thus far has shown that the best way to suppress the power of criminal groups is confiscation of financial assets which are obtained illegally.
Head of OSCE Mission to Serbia Hans Ola Urstad said that there is significant cooperation between police in the region in elimination of all forms of ogranised crime, adding that the OSCE will continue to provide support to police in the region in these efforts.
Confiscation and freezing of assets is the chief instrument in the fight against transnational organised crime, said Urstad.
He said that confiscation and freezing of assets also sends a strong signal from the public that organised crime can be beaten, which will strengthen citizens’ confidence in the police.
Urstad said that the OSCE Mission is working in close cooperation with the Faculty of Law in Belgrade and the Office of the Special Prosecutor on drafting suitable laws in the fight against organised crime.
The aims of this two day conference, being held in Hotel M in Belgrade, are strengthening regional cooperation and proposing concrete measures in the fight against transnational organised crime in the West Balkans.
Participants of the conference will also discuss cross-border cooperation and exchange experience in the fight against organised crime.
