Following a meeting with Portuguese Minister of Foreign Affairs Luis Amado, Jeremic told a joint press conference that he asked for support and a continuation of talks on the SAA, to which Amado answered that Portugal will strongly endorse the re-opening of talks between Serbia and the EU.
Portugal is a member of the “European Three”, it is to hold the EU’s rotating presidency, and if everything goes as planned during its presidency, we will hopefully sign the SAA, stressed the Minister.
He also said that Amado promised Portugal’s technical assistance to Serbia, which Serbia needs in order to liberalise the visa regime with the EU and find itself on the white Schengen list.
Amado noted that Portugal, which is to take over the EU’s rotating presidency on July 1, will closely cooperate with the new government on Serbia’s European integration and added he wishes that Serbia, as a European country strongly linked to the roots of European culture, joins the EU family as soon as possible.
He emphasised that during its EU presidency, Portugal will be engaged in integration and strengthening of ties with all countries in the region and strive to make use of its traditionally good relations with Serbia.
Amado recalled his country’s experience of three decades ago when it decided to take the European road and successfully overcame the period of transition and integration in the EU, thanks to which it can now fully understand the Western Balkans countries.
The collocutors also discussed the future status of Kosovo-Metohija and Jeremic told his Portuguese counterpart that the province’s independence is unacceptable for the new Serbian government and added that Serbia advocates a continuation of negotiations.
The foreign ministers also discussed bilateral relations and agreed that one of the priorities in the upcoming period should be establishing closer and more quality relations in all domains.
Jeremic and Amado also agreed that Portugal and Serbia have satisfactory relations and may be further improved.
