In a statement to Tanjug news agency, Kostunica said that “we are leaving Ahtisaari’s unsuccessful plan behind us”, and the Russian initiative that a UN Security Council mission begins an all inclusive assessment of implementation of standards is becoming a real basis for a new process of negotiations.
According to Kostunica, until now the Serbian government has laid the greatest emphasis on the question of a massive and final return of 200,000 persecuted Serbs to Kosovo-Metohija.
We must begin with this most simple question – why cannot 40,000 Serbs return to Pristina and live normally in their homes? The UN Security Council must above all answer this question and ensure that the issue of return of all those who were persecuted is resolved in new negotiations, stressed the Serbian Prime Minister.
Kostunica said that the threat by terrorists that they will perpetrate violence if the province is not given independence, can be responded to only in one way through the joint stand by Serbia and Russia and all Security Council members, particularly the permanent members, that the international community is stronger than blackmail and threats by terrorists and is capable and determined to secure peace in the province and punish all those who dare to opt for violence.
The UN Security Council fact-finding mission on the situation in Kosovo-Metohija and assessing the fulfillment of standards and implementation of UN SC Resolution 1244 will stay in Belgrade and Pristina from April 25 to 28.
