March pogrom was planned violence, ethnic cleansing

The Serbian government’s Office for Kosovo and Metohija Director Petar Petković recalled that on this day in 2004, a multi-day wave of violence by Albanian extremists began, directed against Serbs, with the aim of driving our people out of Kosovo and Metohija and destroying everything that testified to our state and national presence in the area.

Petković noted that the drowning of Albanian children in the village of Čabra, for which Albanian extremists falsely accused Serbs from the neighbouring village of Zupče, was used as a pretext for the outbreak of violence.

During this violent rampage by Albanian extremists, eight Serbs were killed, more than 900 were wounded and injured, and over 4,000 were expelled, after which six towns and nine villages were left without Serb inhabitants, Petković emphasised, adding that 935 Serbian houses, 35 of our churches and monasteries, and more than 100 church buildings were destroyed or severely damaged.

According to him, although it is clear that the mass violence, which occurred simultaneously in many places across Kosovo and Metohija, was orchestrated politically, to this day no one has been held accountable for one of the gravest crimes in modern history, just as no one has been held accountable as a perpetrator or instigator of numerous other terrorist attacks against Serbs after 1999.
