UN Security Council mission important for starting new negotiations on Kosovo

Serbian Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica said today that the announcement that the UN Security Council will set up a mission that would come to Serbia to see for itself the real situation concerning the fulfillment of standards in Kosovo-Metohija is very important.

That would be the first and very important step for starting a new negotiating process, which would be joined by a new international mediator, Kostunica said.
The legal framework for the formation of the Security Council mission is Resolution 1244, which gives indications that new and real negotiations will this time be conducted within the existing Resolution of the Security Council.
The Serbian authorities are intensively getting prepared for the mission's arrival and cooperate very closely with Russia, which is precisely the country who launched the initiative to set up a mission and send it to Serbia, the Prime Minister said.
He said that after the Security Council session held on April 3, favourable conditions for continuation of negotiations and the finding of the right level of autonomy for the Serbian southern province are being created gradually.
