Serbian Minister of Public Administration and Local Self-Government Zoran Loncar delivered to Vasilije, the Bishop of Srem, the government’s decision on allocating RSD 8 million for the reconstruction of the Serbian Orthodox Church facilities in the Srem eparchy.
The funds will be used for reconstructing the lodgings at the Rakovac monastery on Fruska Gora which were razed to the ground in a fire three years ago, as well as for the reconstruction of the St. Sava’s facility in Sremski Karlovci where the Serbian Orthodox Church’s archives, library and treasury will be situated.
Loncar said that there can be no true reconstruction of Serbia unless it is accompanied by a spiritual revival and recalled that around €13 million was set aside from the National Investment Plan for the renewal of churches in Indjija and Novi Karlovci.
Bishop Vasilije voiced gratitude for the assistance and understanding the Serbian government showed concerning the reconstruction of religious facilities, adding that there should be more initiatives in the entire society so that many church objects that are now in a pitiful state might again be put to their proper use.
