Serbian Minister of Foreign Affairs Vuk Draskovic inaugurated today, in his capacity as Vice-Chairman of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe, the new building of the European Directorate for Quality of Medicines and Healthcare (EDQM).

The building which was inaugurated by Draskovic, top officials of the Council of Europe and local authorities, was opened in a ceremony marked by the European Anthem and the unveiling of the plaque which also carries the name of the Serbian Minister of Foreign Affairs.
The EDQM building houses laboratories and it will regulate the official European standards for the production and quality control of medicines.
Speaking at the inaugural ceremony, Draskovic said that Serbia regularly participates in the meetings of the European Pharmacopoeia aiming to join the network of official laboratories for medicine control in the near future. He stressed that the new building of the European institute in Strasburg strengthens the position of the Council of Europe, which has sponsored the implementation of the project.
Other speakers at the inaugural ceremony included Secretary General of the Council of Europe Terry Davis, Chairman of the French Red Cross Professor Jean-François Mattei, Director of the European Directorate for the Quality of Medicines and Healthcare Agnès Artiges, Mayor of the City of Strasbourg Fabienne Keller, Vice-President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe Walter Schmied and Chairman of the European Pharmacopoeia Commission Dr Michael Morris.
