Velimir Ilic
Ilic told the 2nd Conference of the Serbian Construction Industry at the Belgrade Sava Centre that the domestic building industry is not competitive due to outdated technology, equipment, and machinery and because it does not use new technologies.
Jovan Despotovic of the Serbian Engineers’ Chamber agreed that the construction sector is not in a good shape and that it is incapable of meeting the needs of this year’s building projects in the fields of environmental protection and water management in the European Union, valued at €60 million.
Head of the conference’s organising board Milan Djokovic said that 20 years ago, Serbian builders had contracts abroad worth a total of $1 billion a year, but that the volume has declined to some $100 million in the past few years.
The aim of the conference is to pinpoint main problems in the construction sector and propose solutions to relevant institutions. The conference will also cover housing construction, road building, investment abroad, reorganisation of the industry, and harmonisation of related regulations with those of the EU.
