Parliament adopts Resolution occasioned by "Comprehensive Proposal for the Kosovo Status Settlement"

The new convocation of the Serbian parliament adopted tonight by majority vote the Resolution occasioned by the UN Secretary General's Special Envoy Martti Ahtisaari's "Comprehensive Proposal for the Kosovo Status Settlement" and the continuation of talks on Kosovo-Metohija's future status.

This document rejects all articles from the Special Envoy's Proposal which breach the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Republic of Serbia as an internationally recognised state.

As many as 225 votes were cast in favour of the Resolution and 15 voted against.

This document extends the mandate of the state negotiating team for the continuation of talks on Kosovo status, scheduled for February 21 in Vienna.

Serbian Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica said at the end of this evening’s debate on this document that the Resolution on Kosovo-Metohija is a collective work, which was jointly prepared by the negotiating team, government and parliamentary political parties.

Speaking on behalf of those who proposed the Resolution, Kostunica said that the state negotiating team has thus far worked according to the previous Resolution and all that was said in Serbian parliament.

According to Kostunica, the newly declared Resolution will be a useful addition and provides a framework for the work of the negotiating team on the future status of Kosovo-Metohija.
