According to a statement by the Ministry of Interior, on January 26 this year the Serbian police completed the process of taking over control of borders from the Serbian Army.
The border police controls some 2100 kilometres of borders, with 39 stations and seven regional centres, towards Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, Croatia, Bosnia-Herzegovina and Macedonia.
Demilitrisation of borders and establishment of border police was one of the major conditions which Serbia had to fulfill in the process of acquiring EU membership, and this work which began less than two years ago with the decision of the Supreme Defence Council, was completed on January 26.
Apart from establishing the border police, the process of introducing a completely new computerised system of border control and border crossings is also underway, which is better known as Integrated Border Management.
This system leads to simple and efficient transport of people and goods on border crossings, at the same time most efficiently preventing organised crime, and the Ministry of Interior is on its way to establishing and implementing Integrated Border Management on the borders.
The handing over of state borders has been realised in close cooperation with representatives of the Serbian Army and it rounds up one of the most important processes in Serbia regarding European integration, reads the statement.
