Stojkovic said that the newly constructed prison for prisoners serving sentences for war crimes and organised crime will start working as soon as tomorrow.
He stressed that the prison has been constructed according to international standards, with maximum security, so that all legal conditions have been fulfilled for this prison, which is different from other prisons in many ways, to begin working.
Director of the prison Dragoljub Brajovic said that the new unit spans 2,200 square metres, and its capacity is 120 prisoners. It took one year to complete construction, and all international norms were respected regarding security and comfort of the convicts and the employees.
The Minister of Justice told a press conference after touring the facility that he is satisfied with the administration of all prisons in Serbia, and added that by 2011 the existing and the newly constructed prison unit will be adapted.
According to Stojkovic, restoration work and adaptation of prison buildings in Nis and Sremska Mitroivca are also envisaged; while it is planned that new buildings will be constructed in Padinska Skela, Pancevo, Novi Pazar, near Kraljevo and in Krusevac.
Stojkovic also announced that Belgrade District Prison will be moved, prison hospitals will be adapted and the entire prison system of Serbia will be electronically connected.
He concluded that with the completion of all these works, which will last until 2011, all standards set by Europe will be satisfied when it comes to prisons.
The Minister of Justice also visited today the correctional facility for women in Pozarevac, the only women’s prison in Serbia, where currently 160 prisoners are serving sentences from minor to the most serious offences.
He also visited the majority of areas where convicts are held, and which were renovated in 2004.
