Speaking on a presentation of the new electronic method of payment on highways in Serbia, which has been designed by the Mihailo Pupin Institute for the public road company “Putevi Srbije”, Popovic said that this project shows once more the excellent results achieved by cooperation between science and economy. He added that the Serbian government set aside large funds for many scientific projects in the previous period.
He recalled that in 2006 some €75 million was allocated for the development of science, while the export of domestic technology in the same period was worth €30 million.
According to Popovic, the aim is to make the proceeds from export of technology bigger than the amount of funds which the government allocates from the budget for the development of science.
Director of “Putevi Srbije” Branko Jocic said that the electronic payment of road toll will first be introduced in the Belgrade –Sid part of the highway, and it is expected that by summer this year it will also be introduced on part of the Belgrade – Horgos highway. He added that by the end of the year the new type of payment will also be established on part of the highway towards Nis and Leskovac.
The electronic method of paying of road toll will function through the use of so called tags, a piece of equipment which will be available to all vehicle owners through which payments can be made, so that while travelling it will be possible to pay the road toll without stopping the car.
Every tag will be registered for only one car, and those interested will be able to buy them in shops of the Automotive Association of Serbia, premises of “Putevi Srbije”, and it will soon be available at all petrol pumps and highway motels.
