BiH administrative ban sets entire region back

Prime Minister in a caretaker capacity Professor Đuro Macut, MD, DSc, said today that, in 21st-century Europe, it is inappropriate to try to use administrative measures to prevent someone from attending the observance of a holiday that threatens no one and is directed against no one.

Commenting on the decision by the authorities in Bosnia and Herzegovina to ban the overflight of the Government of Serbia’s aircraft that was to carry the government delegation to Banja Luka for the observance of the Day of Serbian Unity, Freedom and the National Flag, Macut assessed that such moves set the entire region back.

It is precisely moves like these that set all of us in the region back, not holidays on which we celebrate our unity, freedom, history and flag, while at the same time respecting everyone else and their right to preserve their name, identity and tradition, the Prime Minister pointed out.

Such decisions, he added, can only provoke regret and say far more about those who make them than about us.

They certainly will not prevent me from being in Banja Luka this evening, Macut stressed, adding that he would travel to Banja Luka by car because it is important for him to be with the people and for the Day of Serbian Unity, Freedom and the National Flag to be observed with dignity and in peace.

We will not respond by raising tensions. Serbia will continue to extend a hand of cooperation and uphold the civilisational standards of freedom of movement and good-neighbourly relations, to respect others while also preserving and respecting what is its own, Macut said.
