Serbian parliament holds solemn session
Parliament Speaker Predrag Markovic said that all legal and constitutional preconditions have been made for the proclamation of the country’s top legal act.
The Serbian Constitution was officially proclaimed as the national anthem “God of Justice” was sung by art group of the Serbian Army Stanislav Binicki.
For the first time a Serbian constitution was proclaimed in the representative parliament edifice at Nikola Pasic Square, where all constitutions of the former Yugoslavia were proclaimed.
The parliament unanimously adopted the draft constitution on September 30, after which the supreme legal act was confirmed by citizens in the October 28-29 referendum.
The solemn session was attended by Serbian President Boris Tadic, Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica and other government members, Patriarch Pavle and representatives of churches and religious communities in Serbia, the diplomatic corps and the president of the constitutional and supreme courts of Serbia as well as members of the Russian Duma.
Nearly 1,000 citizens from across the country gathered in front of the House of Parliament. Members of the Serbian Army’s elite guard also lined up in front of the edifice.
