Director of the Government of Serbia’s Office for Kosovo and Metohija Petar Petković informed Head of the OSCE Mission in Kosovo and Metohija Ambassador Gerard McGurk today about the highly unstable political and security situation in the southern Serbian province, further aggravated by the arrest of Igor Popović and a series of escalating actions undertaken by Albin Kurti to the detriment of the Serbian people.

Arrest of Igor Popović jeopardising Brussels negotiation process

Petković conveyed to the interlocutor that by arresting Popović, Assistant Director of the Office for Kosovo and Metohija, the authorities in Priština have directly jeopardised the process of normalisation and the dialogue itself, which is not possible as long as Popović remains unjustly in a Priština jail.
Popović was seeking justice for all victims and punishment for the perpetrators of crimes, while Priština’s response – his arrest – clearly demonstrates its unwillingness to confront its own criminal past, Petković said.
Belgrade expects the OSCE Mission to undertake concrete and visible steps in protecting the guaranteed rights of Serbs in the southern province, as well as to act in favour of the release of Popović and all other innocent Serbs currently imprisoned, and will continue to insist on this, Petković stated.
