Serbia continues fight for justice, truth about suffering of Serbian people in Kosovo and Metohija

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior in a caretaker capacity Ivica Dačić stated that today’s conviction of Hashim Thaçi, Jakup Krasniqi, Kadri Veseli and Rexhep Selimi before the Specialist Chambers in The Hague represents a clear, albeit belated, confirmation of what Serbia and the Serbian people have been saying loudly for more than a quarter of a century – that the so-called KLA was a criminal and terrorist organisation.

“This judgment is legal proof that its highest political and military leaders bear personal responsibility for atrocities, murders, abductions and the brutal torture of our people in Kosovo and Metohija.

Before the eyes of the international public, it has finally dismantled the false narrative, built over decades, about supposed ‘national heroes’ and a ‘just liberation struggle’. Those who hid behind political office have now been officially and permanently consigned to where they have always belonged – the history of disgrace and war crimes.

Nevertheless, as a state and a people that has endured immense suffering, we cannot be fully satisfied with this judgment. The fact that the trial panel dismissed the counts of the indictment relating to crimes against humanity constitutes a scandalous political manoeuvre and a direct insult to all innocent victims.

This legal narrowing of the indictment is a cowardly attempt by the international justice system to downplay the scale of the Serbian people’s suffering and to hide from the evident, systematic and monstrous plan of complete ethnic cleansing and the eradication of the Serbian presence in Kosovo and Metohija.

We are witnessing that even the sentences handed down – 25 years each for Thaçi and Krasniqi, 18 years for Veseli and 13 years for Selimi – although severe, are not and never can be commensurate with the pain of families who are still searching for the remains of their fathers, brothers and children.

This judgment cannot bring back the innocent victims, nor can it heal the wounds of our people, but it serves as a historic warning to Priština and its foreign sponsors that a false state cannot be built on the mass graves of murdered Serbs.

The Republic of Serbia, headed by its state leadership, will continue proudly and with its head held high to fight for law, justice and the truth about the suffering of our people.

We will never forget a single site of Serbian suffering, and we will never stop insisting on the full accountability of all those who stained their hands with blood on our sacred land,” Dačić stated.
