Serbs in Kosovo and Metohija existentially threatened, disenfranchised

Director of the Office for Kosovo and Metohija Petar Petković today informed Assistant Secretary-General of the United Nations for Europe, Central Asia and the Americas Miroslav Jenča, about Priština’s numerous escalating moves and the impossible living conditions for the Serbian people in Kosovo and Metohija.

Petković particularly highlighted the latest in a series of unilateral moves by Priština, which is reflected in the plans to build two new bridges over the Ibar River, which is directly directed against the interests of the majority Serbian people.

He stated that since Kurti came to power, 667 ethnically motivated incidents have been recorded in the province, noting that Serbs both south and north of the Ibar River are faced with institutional and physical terror from Priština, arbitrary arrests, staged political processes, and the closure of vital institutions.

According to him, Belgrade remains strongly committed to dialogue, but it is necessary for Priština to fulfill its part of its obligations and form the Community of Serb Municipalities, which the Serbian people have been waiting for for 12 years.

The Director of the Office also pointed out the importance of the UNMIK Mission, in which the Serbian people in Kosovo and Metohija have great trust and expect stronger efforts to protect their endangered rights and existence.
