President of the Republic of Serbia Aleksandar Vučić said today, following a meeting with European Council President António Costa in Belgrade, that Serbia remains sincerely and firmly committed to the European path, reforms and dialogue.
In a joint address to the media, Vučić expressed gratitude to the EU for its support through numerous projects that have contributed to Serbia’s rapid and stable growth.
He recalled that in March he discussed three priority areas with Costa and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, adding that Serbia has already completed most of the work in these areas.
As part of the set of media laws, the Draft Law on Public Information has been completed, receiving the green light from the European Commission, and the Draft Law on Broadcast Media has received the go-ahead from the Commission, Vučić said. Regarding the Draft Law on Public Service Broadcasters, some matters concerning the protection of the rights of viewers, listeners and readers are yet to be finalised, after which it will be fully ready for this, one of three very important points regarding media laws, Vučić specified.
Regarding the process of electing members of the Council of the Regulatory Authority for Electronic Media (REM), he stated that the call for applications was launched on 8 May and that candidacies can be submitted until 23 May, after which the election of Council members will begin.
According to him, the EU’s positive opinion regarding the acceptance of the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights’ (ODIHR) recommendations related to the electoral law and the electoral process itself, including the voter register, is expected in the next two days.
The EU is a partner of the greatest importance to Serbia, accounting for the largest share of Serbia’s trade in goods and services, which exceeded €53 billion for the first time in 2024, Vučić emphasised.
Costa pointed out that there is a positive momentum for EU enlargement, which is a signal for Serbia to take advantage of it, adding that the Union remains strongly committed to Serbia’s accession as a stable and prosperous country.
