During his visit to Ponikve airport yesterday, Ilic stressed that the Serbian government invested €2.5 million in its renovation, adding that the renovation works will be conducted at the same time as works on the military airport Ladjevci near Kraljevo.
He said that current civilian airports in Surcin and Nis are insufficient and that Serbia has to get more airports for civilian air traffic.
According to Ilic, Romania has 19 and Bulgaria 12 airports, therefore Serbia should have at least five in order to develop air traffic in line with regulations. This is why existing military airports should be also used for civilian air traffic.
The Serbian government and Ministry of Capital Investment have given a 50 million dinar down payment to Uzice contractor Putevi so that the renovation of Ponikve could begin in seven days, said Ilic.
The Ponikve runway is around 3.2 kilometres long and most of it has been renovated after the 1999 NATO bombing. The only tasks that remain are demining and to pave another 800 metres with asphalt.
