Dragan Jocic
Speaking in the Serbian parliament on the Bill on identification cards, Jocic said that the existing identity cards do not fulfill the modern need for fast and precise identification of individuals, and added that all citizens should get new identification cards in the upcoming five years, which is the deadline for the validity of current identification cards.
He explained that the Bill envisages that the identification card has a space for a contact microcontroller, and space for a machine-readable zone needed for automatic data reading, and which will contain data pertaining to the nationality, residence, address and unique personal numbers of the identity card holder’s parents.
Jocic said that the novelty in the Bill is that persons, in accordance with their religious or ethnic traditions, can submit photographs for the identification card with head-gear or scarves.
According to Jocic, the Bill envisages that all those older than 16 and of Serbian nationality possess and carry an identification card, and that an option is available for children older than 10 to have an identification card as well.
One of the measures envisaged by the Bill is reducing the validity period of the identity card to five years and for children to two years, Jocic said. He added that the new document will be issued by the Ministry of Interior on the basis of regulations established by the minister.
