Growth in May retail prices recorded

The Serbian Statistics Office said today that retail prices in Serbia in May 2006 went up 1.6% in comparison with the previous month, with the prices of goods and services rising 1.8% and 1.1% respectively.
Compared to December 2005, May retail prices went up by 5.7%.
The cost of living in Serbia this May rose 2% against the previous month and 5.9% against December 2005. The discrepancy between the increase in the index of retail prices and the index of cost of living was due to different impacts of growth in prices for individual items on the overall index.
Prices of agricultural products rose 13.8%. The changes in prices of fresh fruit and vegetables are customary for this period. The price of eggs has fallen.
The costs of industrial foodstuffs went up by 0.7% on average, in which sector an insignificant variation of prices was observed.
The prices of beverages rose 1% due to the increase in the price of alcoholic drinks, while tobacco prices remained at last month's level. The prices of non-food industrial products rose by 1.4% on average. This was mostly influenced by an increase in the price of electricity for households and oil derivatives, whereas prices of other products did not see a significant increase.
The prices of services increased by 1.1% on average, which is a consequence of increase of the price of postal services.
