Milosavljevic recalled on that occasion that these works are being financed from a €50 million loan of the European Investment Bank, as part of the Ministry of Health's project of urgent reconstruction of 20 health centres in Serbia.
He said that since 2000 the European Union, through the European Agency for Reconstruction, has invested some €90 million in grants for health care programmes in Serbia.
Rehn said that this aid is further proof of the EU's commitment to Serbia's economic and social development and voiced hope that Serbia's health system will reach the level of the Union's high standards.
Director of the Institute Dragutin Trickovic said that €2.5 million will be invested in reconstruction, which started in September last year.
According to him, the first phase involved the renovation of 2,000 square metres of usable area and procured a state-of-the-art ultrasound device and surgery equipment while the second phase which will last 100 days will focus on surgery and intensive care departments.
Head of the European Commission's delegation to Serbia-Montenegro Josep Lloveras and Head of the European Agency for Reconstruction (EAR) Mission to Serbia-Montenegro Daniel Giuglaris also visited the Institute today.
