Serbian Minister of Health Tomica Milosavljevic today visited the Zemun Clinical Centre (KBC Zemun) on the occasion of the World Digestive Health Day. The Minister put into operation new endoscopy equipment and a cardiac ultrasound device, worth €2.8 million.
Speaking on the occasion, Milosavljevic said that the equipment represents part of the Ministry of Health project for the emergency reconstruction of health facilities in Serbia, which is being financed by a loan worth €50 million from the European Investment Bank.
He said that within five to ten years equipment will be modernised in a large number of health facilities and some 20 hospitals in Serbia will be reconstructed, including hospitals in Zajecar and Pirot, the Zvezdara Clinical Centre and the Torlak Institute in Belgrade.
He said that Serbia has the highest incidence of digestive diseases in Europe, and added that now there are scanners for digestive endoscopy in all district centre cities.
The Minister said that this year the World Digestive Health Day is focused on the link between the helicobacter pylori infection and stomach cancer. He added that half of mankind is infected by the bacteria, but the appearance of tumors and ulcers depends on predisposition.
