The Centre for Prevention of Diseases in Nis is one of 25 that will be opened in Belgrade and all other larger regional centres in Serbia, and they will specialise in offering health services to citizens who want to check their health.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, Milosavljevic recalled that a study on the most frequent diseases in Serbia, made in 2004, showed that 80% of Serbia's population die of the so-called massive non-contagious diseases, such as heart and cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, breast cancer, colon cancer and cervical cancer.
If these diseases are discovered on time they can be treated successfully, the Minister pointed out and announced that a new trend will be set in Serbia by 2015 which will mean less smokers, obese persons and those with cardiovascular diseases.
EPOS representative Brian Potter pointed out to the worrying fact that every day one woman in Serbia dies of cervical cancer and that 100 citizens of Serbia die prematurely because of smoking.
The opening of these centres is part of the Ministry of Health's project called "Improvement of Preventive Health Services in Serbia" financed by the EU and managed by EAR. This project emerged as a real need for the reform of primary health care.
