Student evaluation in order to create and implement education policy

Serbian Minister of Education and Sport Slobodan Vuksanovic inaugurated today the national evaluation of elementary school students of the fourth grade at the elementary school “Lazar Savatic” in Zemun. The evaluation was conducted today in 125 elementary schools in Serbia.

The national evaluation was organised within the framework of the project “Development of standards and evaluation”. The results of the evaluation will be used for designing and implementing education policy in the future. This project was prepared in cooperation with the Office of Education Quality Assessment, with the financial support of the World Bank.

Speaking at the occasion of the student evaluation held at the elementary school in Zemun, Vuksanovic said that nearly 5,700 students of the fourth grade from 232 sections, all over the Republic are today taking the Serbian language test, and tomorrow a mathematics test will be held.

Serbian Assistant Minister of Education and Sport Vesna Fila explained that the Ministry of Education and Sport and those responsible for designing an education policy on the basis of results will keep in mind the current situation regarding certain aspects of education.

According to Fila, student evaluation is one of the elements in planning a strategy for improving education, in which process during the research data on the students’ level of knowledge from two important study subjects will be gathered.

The evaluation will help in collecting information on certain demographics and education factors, and within this framework teachers will also give reports on methods of realising teaching programmes, work with children and cooperation with parents.

The research does not aim to assess the performance of individual students or teachers, and will not serve to compare the success of different schools, but help the Ministry of Education and Sport design an education policy.
