Cooperation with Japan in field of energy, energy transition

Belgrade/Tokyo, 20 September 2023

Minister of Mining and Energy Dubravka Djedovic Handanovic spoke today in Tokyo with Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry of Japan Yasutoshi Nishimura about the continuation of bilateral cooperation, especially about the process of energy transition and cooperation in the field of energy.

Djedovic Handanovic expressed her gratitude to Japan as one of Serbia’s biggest donors and pointed out that the visit of Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe to Serbia in 2018 accelerated and improved relations between the two countries in all spheres.

The Minister stated that investments from Japan in 2022 have doubled compared to the previous year, that trade exchange has increased significantly and that Japanese companies are among the largest investors in Serbia today.

According to her, Serbia and Japan are facing challenges in the process of energy transition and switching to green energy, and Japan has so far helped our country to modernize thermal plants and make them environmentally friendly.

I hope that we will continue to invest in new knowledge and transfer technology from this country, said Djedovic Handanovic.

Nishimura said that Serbia is a strategically important country due to its geographical position, and that cooperation with our country is extremely important, because Serbia is the most important and largest country in the Western Balkan region.
