Kostunica harshly condemned racist incidents against Roma and stressed that such incidents contravene our tradition and culture. State institutions and the society as a whole must do everything it takes to prevent such incidents or to punish the perpetrators, according to the law, and to publicly condemn such behaviour, said Kostunica.
The participants in the meeting agreed that it is necessary to make joint efforts to raise the overall living standards of the Roma population in Serbia-Montenegro. They also stressed the importance of enabling easier access for Roma to secondary and higher education.
It was also agreed to set up a ministerial commission of the Serbian government to cooperate with the Roma National Council.
Kostunica said that the Serbian government will set aside 40 million dinars to fund the work of minorities’ councils and help them to better promote human and civic rights of ethnic minorities and preserve their tradition.
Serbia-Montenegrin Minster of Human and Minority Rights Rasim Ljajic pointed out the importance of the newly passed election law that enables minorities to take part in the work of the Serbian parliament.
