Director of the Serbian Statistical Office Miladin Kovacevic stated that the population census in Serbia will start tomorrow and that it will be conducted “door to door” over next 30 days by 15,000 selected census-takers.
Speaking at a press conference, Kovacevic explained that the census will be carried out with the interview method and told census-takers, who underwent a five-day training, to have a positive attitude towards citizens and to politely answer all their questions.
The census is being carried out in order to collect precise data on ethnic, economic, educational, migration and other features of the population, which are necessary for obtaining a reliable picture of the current situation, for the projections of future flows, and especially for making a realistic assessment of the consequences of emigration abroad over the past 11 years, Kovacevic said.
He underlined that is of extreme importance that everyone takes part in the census and jointly contribute to its success.
Head of Operations of the EU Delegation to Serbia Martin Klaucke said that the EU supports conducting the census and that the data obtained are important both from the aspect of social policy and from the economic aspect.
Klaucke said that the Serbian Statistical Office made thorough preparations for the census, which will be carried out according to the highest international standards.
