Prime Minister Ana Brnabic said today that everyone will be safe during the EuroPride march and added that during the past week there was no incident at more than 130 events organised in the Serbian capital.
At a reception for foreign diplomats at the Palace of Serbia, on the occasion of EuroPride Week, Brnabic pointed out that this is the true image of Belgrade and Serbia and what they are, stressing that Serbia is an open and free society where everyone is welcome, and that we are yet to show that in the coming years.
She explained that Serbia did not organise EuroPride because someone blackmailed it in order to stay on the European path, but for the sake of our people, country and society, as well as the well-being of the entire region.
The Prime Minister expressed her gratitude to the foreign diplomats, among whom were Rapporteur of the European Parliament for Serbia Vladimir Bilcik and Head of the EU Delegation to Belgrade Emanuele Giaufret, for coming and emphasised that she is proud for having been able to host them.
What we do in Serbia is extremely important, not only for me, but also for my country and government, as well as for the entire region. We all knew that when Goran Miletic submitted Belgrade’s application for the organisation of EuroPride and I supported it with a letter as Prime Minister, it would be difficult, because it must be difficult when you implement radical changes like we are doing now, changes for the better.
This is the first EuroPride outside the European Economic Area and the first in Southeast Europe, underlined the Prime Minister and pointed out that we are pushing the boundaries of freedom and European values, and that she is very proud of it, despite all the difficulties that existed.
According to her, the next EuroPride will be held on Malta, but it will not have so many events like this one.
Brnabic said that Coordinator of EuroPride Goran Miletic and his team, she and her team, as well as all the ministers who were at the reception, went through a lot together, but that it was worth it.
We opened a debate that is extremely important for our society and it would not be possible without EuroPride. With the support of the EU, we are changing Serbia at least a little for the better, the fight continues and we will continue to fight, said the Prime Minister.
European Commissioner for Equality Helena Dalli pointed out that this morning she had a good conversation with Brnabic about the progress that Serbia is making in the field of LGBT rights, minority rights, as well as joint work on improving laws in the field of human rights, so that no one is left behind and so that every person in Serbia is free without discrimination and could realise their full potential.
We offer all professional help. I am glad that we are all welcome at the march and that our safety is guaranteed, emphasised Dalli.
The reception at the Palace of Serbia was attended by most ambassadors from EU member states, as well as ministers in the government of Serbia - Minister of Trade, Tourism and Telecommunications Tatjana Matic, Minister for European Integration Jadranka Joksimovic, Minister of Finance Sinisa Mali, Minister for Human and Minority Rights and Social Dialogue Gordana Comic and others.
