Prime Minister Ana Brnabic spoke today with OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media, Teresa Ribeiro.
The meeting was attended by Head of the OSCE Mission in Serbia, Ambassador Jan Braathu.
Brnabic pointed out in the meeting that the government is committed to improving the overall media environment and that the OSCE is an extremely important partner in this.
She stated that the OSCE represents a bridge between the government, on the one hand, and the media and civil society organisations, on the other.
The mission of this organisation in Serbia worked with the government and media and journalist associations on the preparation of the Media Strategy and Action Plan and on the implementation of activities and monitoring of the implementation of the Strategy. The OSCE mission also actively participated in all working groups dealing with the drafting of media laws and issues of journalists' safety.
The Prime Minister emphasized that one of the key priorities of the future government will certainly be activities in the area of the rule of law, primarily judicial reform and the media.
Ribeiro said that the OSCE will continue to support all activities aimed at improving the media scene and the position of journalists, as well as continuing the implementation of the Action Plan for the Media Strategy.
The Prime Minister added that the priority in that area is to complete the amendments to the Law on Public Information and Media. In addition, work will continue on the adoption of amendments to the Criminal Code in order to improve the criminal-legal protection of journalists, which was initiated with the great support of experts engaged by the OSCE Mission in Serbia.
Speaking about the safety of journalists, Brnabic said that the Working Group for the Safety and Protection of Journalists, among other things, regularly monitors the status of current cases of attacks and threats to the safety of journalists.
She pointed to the case of journalist Milan Pantic from Jagodina, who was killed 21 years ago, and emphasised that it is important to end that case.
Brnabic and Riberio agreed that it is important to continue dialogue and strengthen trust with media and journalist associations on all important issues for the media community.
