Serbian Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica said today that UN Special Envoy for the implementation of standards in Kosovo-Metohija Kai Eide stated in his report that the situation in Kosovo-Metohija is gloomy and oppressive, but that implementation of standards will go faster once the talks on the province’s status begin.

The Serbian government’s official web site gives the Prime Minister’s statement in full.
“In his report to the Security Council, Kai Eide says that the situation in Kosovo-Metohija is gloomy and oppressive, but that the implementation of standards will be sped up once the talks on the province’s status start.
Instead of a quicker implementation of standards, what we see in Kosovo is the increasing violence against Serbs.
We must put an end to this violence once and for all, and this is the first duty that the international community must perform.
It is indeed important that Special Envoy of the UN Secretary-General for negotiations on the status of Kosovo-Metohija Marti Ahtisaari now give a statement concerning the upsurge of violence against Serbs and tell the public how in his opinion can the talks be conducted while Serbs in Kosovo are constantly exposed to terror.“
