In a statement to the Beta news agency following the meeting with the representatives of countries in the Balkan and Black Sea regions on the prevention of avian flu, Milosavljevic said that in the talks with other ministers on the strategy of communication and rapid and timely informing of the public, it was concluded that the measures Serbia took in August and September were well timed.
Milosavljevic said that the meeting was important because the ministers exchanged information on what has been done in particular countries and agreed to increase future contacts. The next meeting is scheduled for February 2006 in Croatia.
The minister said that he also met with European Commissioner for Health Markos Kyprianou with whom he discussed on cooperation between Serbia and the EU in the health sector, and announced some good news in that field in the future.
Among the participants in the Athens meeting, who were served fried chicken, were Montenegrin minister of Health Miodrag Pavlicic, the representatives of the World Health Organisation, the European Commission and the European Centre for Prevention and Disease Control.
There is an increased risk for break out of avian flu in the countries of the Balkan and the Black Sea regions due to the fact that migratory birds, marked as the main transmitters of the disease, fly over these territories.
