Serbian Deputy Prime Minister Miroljub Labus said today at a meeting with chairman of the working group on Serbia’s accession to the WTO and Belgian Ambassador to Serbia-Montenegro Francois Roux that the Serbian government will do the utmost possible to see that Serbia becomes a member of the WTO by 2008.
Stressing the importance of accession to the WTO, Labus said that it also represents a step towards EU membership. He added that these two processes are separate, yet closely connected.
Francois Roux said that the first session of the working group on Serbia’s accession to the WTO held on October 7 was highly successful and offered his full support to Serbia’s efforts in the process of joining this organisation.
Labus and Roux also discussed the issue of relations between two member states within the state union of Serbia-Montenegro, as well as the division of authority between Serbia and Montenegro concerning future negotiations with the WTO and the EU.
At today’s meeting, Labus and Roux agreed that the issue of a referendum in Montenegro and negotiations on Kosovo-Metohija’s future status should not slow down the process of Serbia’s integration.
